“There is such a shortage of trained healthcare workers that our efforts in education may well be our biggest legacy. If you educate one nurse they will care for thousands over their career.”

Bob Kasworm, Machame Hospital (Nursing Scholarships)

“I’d just like to say thank you to the people that put their time and love and patience in making these beautiful quilts for everybody,” he said. “It is going to remind me where I've been and where I'm going. I can say I got this when I lost everything, and this is one of the first, nicest things I got. And it gave me something to hold onto in the midst of a crisis.”

Edward Lynch, Hurricane Helene Survivor & Recipient of Lutheran World Relief Quilt

“Last week we housed someone who had been sleeping on the streets. When asked if he was looking forward to sleeping in a bed, he said he didn’t mind sleeping outside except when it got so hot. As he got settled in his new place, he put his sleeping bag on top of his bed and laid down. He fell asleep at 2 pm and slept until 6 am the next day. Sixteen hours of sleep. Safe. In a bed. In a quiet and cool place. This work is hard, impactful and hopeful. And we are here for it, for as long as we are needed.”

NEBRASKA SYNOD NURSING SCHOLARSHIPS - TANZANIA

There's a severe shortage of healthcare workers in Tanzania, with just one nurse or midwife for every 2,800 people. There is an effort to tackle this issue by training staff at Machame Hospital near Mount Kilimanjaro and nurses at the School of Nursing. Many students can't afford the $1,700 yearly cost of tuition, room and board for the three-year nursing program. Thankfully, sponsors like First Lutheran and the Nebraska Synod cover these fees, helping students continue their education without financial barriers.
